PIRHANA: Participatory Inquiry into Religious Health Assets Networks and Agency
PIRHANA is a participatory research tool that was developed for work undertaken by ARHAP in a research programme sponsored by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2006 to map the religious health assets of selected sites in Zambia and Lesotho.

It was piloted in 2005 by Steve de Gruchy with an ARHAP team during field research in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia. Since then, and in line with the nature of participatory research, PIRHANA has continued to be subjected to rigorous critique and undergone several versions in order to integrate the lessons learned in the field.

PIRHANA has been developed to focus on different community concerns – from HIV/AIDS to gender-based violence.

Different forms of PIRHANA have now been developed and run in the following countries:

  • SSA: Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, Uganda, the DRC, Lesotho, Kenya, Namibia, Ghana, and South Africa (Cape Town, Pietermaritzburg, Eastern Cape, Johannesburg)
  • USA: Memphis, Atlanta, Chicago, North Carolina
  • Europe: UK and Norway

There is now a large community of practice of researchers and practitioners engaged in related forms of community asset mapping. It is our belief that heart of the tool lies in the thinking and logic within it and the skilled facilitation required (not necessarily the workshop mechanics). Therefore, while we provide an original version of the PIRHANA Facilitator’s manual here under a Creative Commons license – we strongly encourage those interested in utilizing the toolset to contact us and engage before utilizing it in the field.

PIRHANA MANUAL VERSION 5 (2007)
This version of PIRHANA was developed by ARHAP (now IRHAP) in 2007. It was designed for use in a particular project focused on HIV/AIDS in an African setting – which should be taken into account when reading the manual. Since then, many different versions of PIRHANA have been developed, focusing on different issues, and with adaptations made for other contexts.
